Abstract

IL-17A and IL-17F have been studied for years as near-perfect twins in autoimmunity, infections, autoinflammation, and cancer. Initially identified as 'protectors' in fungal infections, these two debated cytokines were found to be absolutely pathogenic when chronically produced.
Recently, several researchers identified the IL-17F/IL-17RC axis to better distinguish the two cytokine functions. Moreover, we identified a set of cystic fibrosis patients in whom only IL-17F appears to be chronically produced and measurable in peripheral blood. Thus, the two cytokines acting probably separately may be exploited as a potential target for different clinical conditions.
