Abstract
During the last forty years breakthrough technologies such as recombinant DNA, glyco-conjugation, reverse vaccinology, adjuvants, structure-based design, synthetic biology, and mRNA vaccines changed dramatically the vaccine field and, in several instances, allowed to respond quickly and conquer diseases that were previously impossible. In 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic suddenly accelerated the transformation of the field by introducing new technologies, dramatically accelerating product development, and using emergency regulatory approval for large scale vaccination. The scientific and technological revolutions will continue to accelerate the field and the possibility exists that vaccines not only will be in the position to fight emerging infections in less than 100 days, but they also may exit from the traditional field of preventing infectious diseases and start to conquer other fields such as cancer therapy, autoimmune and metabolic diseases.
