The Integration of Clinical Research and Practice: Davide Cacchiarelli’s Address at the Chamber of Deputies
On the occasion of the inauguration of the bioERGOtech Foundation ETS, held at the Chamber of Deputies, Davide Cacchiarelli, Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Naples “Federico II” and Principal Investigator at the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM), took part in the session dedicated to the integration between clinical research and medical practice.
In his address, he highlighted the potential of clinical genomics, illustrating its main areas of application in supporting the diagnosis and screening of genetic diseases, as well as the challenges that research aims to tackle to improve our understanding of the human genome.
Professor Cacchiarelli also drew attention to the essential role of geneticists and molecular biologists in the education of medical professionals, reaffirming the importance of medical genetics and laboratory medicine as fundamental pillars of diagnosis. Finally, he emphasized the need for strict caution in the use of genetic testing, which should be employed exclusively for diagnostic or scientific research purposes, and not as recreational or commercial “over-the-counter” tools.
His remarks reinforced the importance of fostering dialogue between scientific research and clinical practice, with the shared goal of translating the progress of genomics into tangible benefits for patients.
