Prof. Alberto Auricchio Recognized as Italian Knowledge Leader 2025
TIGEM is proud to announce that its Director, Prof. Alberto Auricchio, has been recognized as Italian Knowledge Leader 2025, a prestigious award promoted by Convention Bureau Italia and conferred on Italian scientists who play a key role in the governance of major international scientific societies.
The Italian Knowledge Leader Award celebrates researchers whose scientific excellence is paired with a strong commitment to international leadership, strategic vision, and the ability to guide global scientific communities. In this context, the recognition highlights in particular Prof. Auricchio’s role as President of the European Society of Gene & Cell Therapy (ESGCT) and the significant contribution he makes, through this position, to the development and advancement of the international gene and cell therapy field.
As President of ESGCT, Prof. Auricchio plays a central role in shaping the society’s scientific agenda, including the definition of research priorities, educational initiatives, and international congress programs. His work fosters dialogue between basic and clinical research, promotes interdisciplinary approaches, and encourages collaboration across countries, institutions, and sectors. Through this leadership, ESGCT continues to serve as a key platform for the exchange of knowledge and the translation of scientific discoveries into innovative therapies for patients.
The award also recognizes Prof. Auricchio’s outstanding scientific career and long-standing commitment to translational research. At TIGEM, he leads pioneering translational and clinical research programs focused on the development of gene therapy approaches for rare inherited diseases, particularly affecting the eye and metabolic system. His work has contributed to advancing innovative therapeutic strategies from the laboratory to clinical application, with the ultimate goal of improving the lives of patients with currently untreatable conditions.
In addition to his academic and clinical activities, Prof. Auricchio is actively involved in international scientific and industrial collaborations, supporting the translation of research into real-world solutions. He has also played a key role in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, contributing to the creation of spin-off companies such as AAVantgarde Bio, which is dedicated to developing next-generation gene therapy platforms for inherited retinal diseases.
This important recognition not only celebrates Prof. Auricchio’s personal achievements and leadership, but also reflects TIGEM’s broader impact and international standing as a center of excellence in gene therapy and rare disease research. It further confirms TIGEM’s role in shaping the future of biomedical research through scientific innovation, global collaboration, and commitment to translating knowledge into therapies.
