Short CV

Digestive epithelia represent a functional unit responsible for digestion, absorption and processing of nutrients. They also form a barrier separating intestinal microbiota from the host and produce a variety of important regulatory molecules. The essential importance of digestive epithelia becomes obvious in multiple digestive disorders that constitute the second most common disease entity worldwide. Despite their obvious importance, we have only limited knowledge about the mechanisms how digestive epithelia cope with their everyday stresses and how their alterations contribute to disease development. To promote our understanding of digestive epithelia, my talk will focus on three distinct areas: (i) keratin-desmosome system; (ii) iron metabolism; (iii) alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency (AATD). It will discuss both work performed in transgenic animals as well as clinical observations as trigger of current translational efforts.
