Abstract
The progress of studies on biological samples increasingly requires the development of highly innovative and customized engineering platforms. The key technologies in the future of biotechnology require the ability to manipulate matter at micro and nanoscale and on the other hand about the development of an accurate characterization through high sensitivity diagnostic tools. For example one of a challenging requests are the fabrication of microfluidics and biomedical Lab-on-a-Chip (LoC) platforms through flexible on-demand ink-jet printing for breaking the rigidity of classical lithography, printing of high ordered geometrical patterns and capability of dispensing biological inks such as DNA and proteins for bio-sensing, or single cells printing. Besides, the development of platforms with embedded label-free, quantitative and 3D imaging functionalities are highly demanded for affording the needs of analysis of single cells and in high-throughput modality. I will illustrate several examples of innovative platforms currently under development at the Institute of Applied Science and Intelligent Systems on both issues that could be promised tools for in advanced biological and biomedical research.
